WhatsApp Business API Pricing in India (2026): Cost per Message Explained

By Wabiss Engineering Team • 9 min read • Updated October 2026

"How much does WhatsApp Business API cost in India?" is one of the most common questions businesses ask before they start. The answer changed in 2025, and again in 2026. This guide explains Meta's current pricing model in plain language, shows what's free, and helps you estimate your monthly bill.

Quick summary: Meta charges per delivered template message. The price depends on the template category (Marketing, Utility, or Authentication) and the customer's country. Replies inside the 24-hour customer service window are free. Use our free WhatsApp pricing calculator to estimate your cost.

1. Per-Message Pricing Replaced Conversation Pricing

Until mid-2025, Meta billed WhatsApp Business API usage per 24-hour "conversation". On 1 July 2025, Meta switched to per-message pricing: you are charged each time a template message is delivered. If you read older articles that mention "1,000 free conversations per month", that allowance belonged to the old model and no longer applies.

2. The Three Message Categories

Every template you create belongs to one category, and each category has its own price:

CategoryUsed forRelative cost
MarketingOffers, product launches, festive sales, re-engagement, newslettersHighest
UtilityOrder confirmations, shipping updates, payment reminders, appointment confirmationsLow
AuthenticationOne-time passwords (OTPs) and login verification codesLow

In India, reported 2026 figures put Marketing at roughly ₹0.86 per message (after Meta raised the India marketing rate on 1 January 2026), and Utility and Authentication at roughly ₹0.115 per message, all before GST. Meta also raised India's authentication-international rate (OTPs sent by businesses outside India to Indian users) on 1 April 2026.

Meta updates rate cards several times a year. Always confirm the current figures on Meta's official rate card or in your WhatsApp platform dashboard before budgeting.

3. What Is Free on the WhatsApp Business API

  • Customer-service replies: when a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens. Normal (non-template) replies inside that window are free.
  • Utility templates inside the window: also free.
  • Click-to-WhatsApp ads: when a customer starts a chat from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page button and you reply within 24 hours, a 72-hour free entry point window opens in which all your messages — including templates — are free.

This is why fast replies matter: answering within 24 hours (manually or with a chatbot) keeps your support costs at zero.

4. GST and INR Billing for Indian Businesses

Indian businesses pay 18% GST on Meta's charges. In January 2026, Meta launched INR billing for India. According to Meta's documentation, eligible businesses must move all their WhatsApp Business Accounts to INR by 31 December 2026; from 1 January 2027, Meta says it will stop delivering messages from non-INR accounts of eligible customers. If your platform or Meta account still bills in USD, plan the switch now.

5. Worked Example: A Typical Monthly Bill

Imagine an online store in India that sends, in one month:

MessagesCategoryApprox. rateCost
10,000 festive offersMarketing₹0.8631₹8,631
5,000 order & shipping updatesUtility₹0.115₹575
2,000 login OTPsAuthentication₹0.115₹230
Meta charges₹9,436
With 18% GST≈ ₹11,134

Customer-service replies to the people who answered those messages would cost nothing extra if sent within 24 hours. Try your own numbers in the WhatsApp API pricing calculator.

6. Platform Fees: The Cost Most People Miss

Meta's rates are only part of the bill. WhatsApp platforms (often called BSPs or tech providers) usually charge a monthly subscription, and some add a markup on every message — which can raise your real cost per message significantly. When comparing providers, ask:

  • Do you add any markup on Meta's per-message rates?
  • Is there a per-user, per-seat, or per-contact charge?
  • Are chatbots, AI replies, and the API included or paid add-ons?

Wabiss passes Meta's rates through with no platform markup by default and shows the exact cost of every message in your Usage Report. See Wabiss pricing.

7. How to Lower Your WhatsApp API Bill

  • Reply within 24 hours so customer-service messages stay free.
  • Categorise templates correctly — genuine transactional updates belong in Utility, not Marketing.
  • Use Click-to-WhatsApp ads to unlock the 72-hour free window for follow-ups.
  • Segment your audience and send offers only to people likely to be interested.
  • Clean your contact list to stop paying for undeliverable or ignored messages.
